Marc Jonas Block

Mr. Block is a senior associate whose legal practice includes commercial litigation, intellectual property (including copyright and trademark applications, intellectual property licenses and the enforcement of copyrights, trademarks and intellectual property licenses) and real estate law. He negotiates licenses for software, film rights in life stories and brand marketing. He represents clients in trademark, false advertisement and copyright infringement claims in federal courts located in New York, New Jersey, Georgia, California, and Connecticut, as well successfully prosecute and defend against cyber-squatting claims in federal courts and before the National Arbitration Forum. Mr. Block prosecutes trademark applications before the United States Patent and Trademark Office, and appears before the Trademark Trials and Appeals Board on cancellation and opposition proceedings. He regularly counsels fashion designers regarding their commercial and intellectual property needs, particularly brand development, and advises musicians, television directors, graphic and commercial artists regarding their rights under state and federal laws, including copyrights. Mr. Block also has substantial experience in real estate matters, including successful applications for specific performance and money judgment for the holder of an option to purchase real property, and representing a mortgage holder in a large multi-jurisdictional foreclosure action in New York, Connecticut, Virginia and North Carolina. Mr. Block also has significant appellate experience, having argued before many different state and federal appellate courts in New York, Florida, Georgia and New Jersey on a wide variety of matters including contractual transactions, breaches and other disputes, secondary meaning and likelihood of confusion of trademarks, the application of estoppel to copyright infringements, ownership of real property and procedural matters.

Mr. Block is a current guest lecturer on legal and business issues facing fashion designers at Parsons New School of Design and a former adjunct professor at the Fashion Institute of Technology's Foundation Center for Continuing Education. He authored the following published articles: (1) Nissan Motor Co. v. Nissan Computer Corp.: Ninth Circuit Construes the Federal Trademark Dilution Act, 13 N.Y. St. B.A. Bright Ideas 3 (Winter, 2004); and (2) When are Ideas Protectible?, 18 N.Y. St. B.A. Bright Ideas 1 (Spring, 2009). Mr. Block is an officer in the International Intellectual Property Society, and an active member of the New York State Bar Association.

Mr. Block is admitted to practice in all New York state trial and appellate courts, and in all New Jersey state trial and appellate courts. He is a member of the bar of each of the following federal courts: the United States District Courts for the Southern and Eastern Districts of New York, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit.

Mr. Block is a graduate of Hamilton College (A.B. 1996), and a graduate of Brooklyn Law School (J.D. 1999).
